Jim Higgins, MEP (Fine Gael, North-West) elected Quaestor of the European Parliament

Jim Higgins, Fine Gael MEP for the North West constituency, was today re-elected by his fellow MEPs to the position of Quaestor in the European Parliament.  This will be Mr Higgins' second term as Quaestor.  There are a total of 5 Quaestors in the European Parliament and they are responsible for administrative and financial aspects of the MEPs and generally ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the European Parliament.  The post involves regular interaction with all MEPs as well as the Parliament's President, vice-Presidents and heads of the different political groups. Mr Higgins will serve until the end of the current European Parliament term in 2014.

The European Parliament has a new President

Today MEPs elected Martin Schulz to be the new European Parliament president with 387 votes in favour out of 670 cast. The 56-year old German MEP will lead the European parliament for two and half years, until the beginning of the next legislature in July 2014.

Martin Schulz (S&D, Germany) replaces the outgoing President Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland).

From Thursday 12 January to Saturday 14 January, the European Parliament Office in Ireland is present at STAND N° 20 (European Union) at the RDS, where staff members will provide general information to school children and the general public on the EU and the role of the European Parliament.
